I didn't know it at the time, but shortly after deciding to move to Ohio to get away from the stress of the east coast, I was on my way to becoming a professional euchre player. I've always liked playing cards, mostly with friends and family. Back then we played a lot of Set-back, Pinochle, and knock rummy. After moving here, I joined a local community center because they had a pinochle game every Wednesday. Shortly after joining I was asked if I played Euchre. Euchre? Heck, I'd never heard of it.
Weeks went by and I was asked again and again. I finally decided to try it. Well, it was sort of like set-back, except for the jack thing. That made no sense at all. A heart is a diamond? Except when a diamond is a heart. I didn't even want to think about those other suits. Still, I kind of liked the game. It was fast moving like set-back, not requiring the deep thought of pinochle. Or so I thought at the time.
Even after many reneges and helping the other team win most every game we played, much to my surprise I was invited back. Seeing how popular the game was, I decided that if I'm going to play Euchre, I've got to learn how. It seems that most people in these parts were born with knowledge of the game. I had a lot of catching up to do. I bought every book I could find on Euchre, read everything I could find on the internet, and played anywhere there was a game to be played. When I wasn't playing live games I would be at the computer playing against bots (I had a better chance of winning that way). I played 6 to 8 hours a day. Every day. The more I played, the more I liked the game. I started understanding the strategy and started to win.
In 2009 I started a website that promotes the game and offers tips to new players. I've outgrown the bots and now play online plus playing live 3 or 4 nights a week. I would have never believed a card game could become such a big part of my life. I have met so many wonderful people playing, and have had such a great time playing, that I'm glad I decided to go and try something new.
Today, Ohio Euchre is viewed worldwide and considered one of the best sites for those interested in the game of Euchre.
This site is a restoration of Don's original Ohio Euchre lessons, articles, and quizzes, rebuilt on modern web tooling but kept as close to the original as possible.
Site rebuilt and maintained by Garrett Smith, with special thanks to I75North for helping test the site. Much of the inspiration came from the r/euchre subreddit and the Reddit Euchre League Discord.
